There’s a conference called ‘Dementia: Our lives, our story: Working together for a better future’ taking place at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham on Monday 28th May – which is free to those with dementia and their carers.

The event is being hosted by the Leicester-based charity Trent Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) in partnership with Dementia UK and Innovations in Dementia. It’s been developed and will be led by people living with dementia and their carers. It will provide an opportunity to come together with professionals working in the field – whilst meeting other people who have been affected by dementia.

The event will include information stands and surgeries for people living with dementia and their carers so you can talk to advisers about issues such as day-to-day living with dementia and financial and legal advice.

There will also be interactive workshops where you can pick up tips and share your own experiences. For example, the workshops will cover topics like self-management, creative approaches, assistive technologies and life stories. There will be a video ‘diary room’ and a ‘quiet room’ with a support worker available too.

The new Dementia web Leicestershire site will be officially launched at this event.

Contact Deborah or Pauline on 0116 257 5017 Monday- Thursday to book your place or find out more. Click on link for a copy of the event flyer.

Designing Hospital Environments for People with Dementia

Two-day residential workshops

17-18 May 2012 – Cranage Hall near Crewe;

5-6 September 2012 – Alexandra House near Swindon

There is increasing evidence that the environment of care, particularly in acute hospitals, can have a significant effect on people who have dementia. Yet health professionals and estates and facilities staff often struggle with how best to create a therapeutic environment for people with dementia.

The King’s Fund’s award-winning Enhancing the Healing Environment programme proves that straightforward and inexpensive changes to the design and fabric of the care environment can have a considerable impact on the wellbeing of people with dementia, while at the same time reducing overall service costs.

Last year economist Andrew Dilnot was asked by the government to investigate and report how the social care system could be changed to make accessing services fairer. Many people have all of their life-time accrued assets swallowed up by the cost of their care needs. It has been suggested that a system to cap these costs could be brought in therefore protecting people from losing everything. These costs can particularly affect people with dementia who may need long term care.
